The Quilcene Lantern is emerging as one of the most unique venues for live music here in the Olympic Peninsula. It’s a large forest farm property converted to a retreat, and features cabins and a large barn. The barn is such an amazing structure with the sounds that it holds. Patrons can float onto the barn floor from a gentle hillside that faces the structure itself.
On to the bands (Headliner first, working our way back):
EARTH
EARTH has been a band operating locally for decades. They are often sited as an influence by “doom metal” bands. Genre-picking aside, EARTH doesn’t write songs so much as compositions that meander outside the traditional verse-chorus-verse you’ll find in much modern heavy music. And there’s no vocals at all. The instruments tell the stories, creating solemn atmospheres.
Dylan Carlson, the founder and only continuing member of the band, would be unrecognizable inside a Bass Pro Shop or Cabela’s—while his appearance may say one thing, his band leading and guitar work say quite another thing.

SERIAL HAWK
Really enjoyed how this band used the lighting to illuminate the mood of their music. They took the stage as it went dark at the Lantern barn. I was grateful to have a good low-light lens to capture the mood.
VON WILDENHAUS
Such a unique lineup with wonderful vocals and accompaniment- plus TWO drummers! Van Wildenhaus used up as much stage space available to send out their sound as the opening act.
I’m looking forward to more opportunities to shoot photos at the Quilcene Lantern — if you get an opportunity to go to this venue TAKE IT. It’s an amazing place!
